Punjab Police recover 690-gram IED near police establishment in Amritsar
Amritsar Rural Police said on Sunday they had recovered a 690-gram improvised explosive device, an electronic detonator, a battery, a timer and an iron box near a police establishment, foiling what officials described as a terror plot.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Kulbir Singh discovered the device while on patrol during the intervening night of August 15 and 16, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal. Singh found a suspicious black-coloured, wax-wrapped packet within the jurisdiction of the Gaggomahal police post.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said in a post on X that after seizure the explosive material was handled as per established security protocols and defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad. The remaining items were seized by police.
SSP Chahal said security checks had been intensified and government establishments were under close watch in the run-up to Independence Day.
A case under the Explosive Substances Act was registered at Ramdas police station in Amritsar Rural on Sunday, and further investigation is underway, police said.
