Couple jailed 17 years for manslaughter of two men drugged during robbery scheme
A couple who drugged men seeking sexual services in order to steal from them were sentenced to 17 years in prison each at Oxford Crown Court after admitting the manslaughter of Gary Mouat, 36, from Oxfordshire, and Malcolm King, 80, from Gloucestershire, who died in 2025 and 2024 respectively.
Adina Mihai and Madalin Dumitru also each admitted two counts of administering poison to surviving victims on the first day of their trial in June. Two additional victims, who cannot be named due to reporting restrictions, survived.
According to the prosecution, Mihai posed as a sex worker and arranged to meet men at their homes after advertising services online. Dumitru would drop Mihai at the victim's address and wait nearby, reportedly armed with weapons in case of trouble. The court heard that four victims had their alcoholic drinks spiked with the powerful sedative gamma-butyrolactone (GBL).
Prosecuting counsel Julian Evans KC said that after encouraging the victim to drink the spiked alcohol, Mihai would wait until the victim lost consciousness before searching for cash, aftershave, jewellery, and expensive watches. Evans said the defendants, who previously lived in Birmingham before moving to Ilford, were 'willing to act in this way out of greed' and had 'agreed upon in advance' a shared intention.
A video statement from Gary Mouat's eight-year-old son was played at the sentencing hearing. The child said: 'My daddy was funny, silly, loving and a trickster, we always used to prank each other. Why did you have to kill my daddy, you could have just taken the money, he was really kind, he would have given it to you. He was my daddy and now he's gone.'
Sentencing the pair, Mrs Justice Brunner KC said 'many hearts have been broken' due to the defendants' actions, describing their roles as 'equally significant.' She said they had a 'joint plan to covertly drug the men' and gave 'little thought to the consequences of your actions.'
