Fulham sign Southampton's Shea Charles in deal worth up to £30m
Fulham have completed the signing of midfielder Shea Charles from Southampton on a five-year contract, with the fee structured as £26m upfront and up to £6m in performance-related add-ons, taking the potential total to £30m.
The transfer makes Charles the most expensive Northern Ireland footballer on record. He began his career at Manchester City and also attracted interest from Leeds United before opting to join Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Charles is understood to have been brought in to replace Sasa Lukic, who moved to Ipswich Town for £9m the previous week. According to Fulham's official website, Charles said he hoped to 'kickstart' his Premier League career at what he described as 'a great club with a really good vision.'
The signing is Fulham's third under manager Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed following Marco Silva's departure to take charge of Benfica. Arbeloa previously served as interim manager at Real Madrid during the second half of the 2024-25 season.
Charles is Fulham's third most expensive signing to date. Striker Gonzalo Garcia, who joined from Real Madrid earlier in the same transfer window, and winger Kevin, signed from Shakhtar the previous summer, each cost approximately £34m.
Since Arbeloa's appointment, Fulham have signed Garcia, midfielder Cesar Palacios — both from Real Madrid — and now Charles. The club are scheduled to face Malaga away on Wednesday and Stuttgart at home on Saturday 15 August, before hosting Chelsea in their Premier League opener on Monday 24 August.
