Becky G links new album 'Baraja Bendita' to immigration advocacy in CBS interview
Singer Becky G, born Rebbecca Marie Gomez, said in an interview with CBS Mornings published August 13, 2026, that her new album 'Baraja Bendita' connects her artistic and advocacy work, with the music video for her track 'EPA' — in which she is shown breaking a block of ice — made in response to recent immigration raids.
Becky G grew up in Inglewood, California, the oldest of four children in a Mexican household shared with her parents, grandparents and siblings. She began singing at age 9, and as a teenager her viral cover songs led to a record deal that made her the primary financial provider for her family.
She told CBS Mornings co-host Gayle King that she used to carry resentment over the pressure of that breadwinner role, but said the family did 'a lot of work' to reach a place where she could heal and her parents could 'just be my mom and dad.'
Her 2014 single 'Shower,' released 12 years before the interview, recently surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify after a resurgence on social media. Her catalog now totals 28.3 billion streams worldwide, and she is currently on tour as a special guest with Karol G, having also collaborated with Selena Gomez and Bad Bunny.
The album title 'Baraja Bendita' loosely translates, according to Becky G, to 'a blessed deck of cards,' a reference to the idea of controlling how one plays the cards one is dealt. She described the record as combining a more vulnerable, intimate side of her identity with her public professional persona.
Becky G, 29, has been in a relationship with professional soccer player Sebastian Lletget for nearly a decade. The couple called off their engagement in 2023 following publicly disclosed infidelity. She said in the interview that it is now 'a new relationship' and that both are happy, describing the work they have put into it.
